A substantial portion of the course is devoted to test validity, defined as the extent to which a test measures what it is intended to measure. Participants explore multiple forms of validity, including content validity, face validity, sampling (logical) validity, criterion-related validity, concurrent validity, predictive validity, construct validity, and factorial validity. Each type is examined in terms of definition, purpose, procedures for verification, and practical applications in educational, clinical, and occupational settings.
The course then examines factors affecting validity, highlighting how learner characteristics, test construction, language clarity, administration conditions, and environmental variables can influence test outcomes and compromise interpretive accuracy.
Attention is subsequently directed to test reliability, defined as the consistency and stability of measurement results. Participants study the true score theory, sources of measurement error, and the relationship between observed scores, true scores, and error variance. Multiple methods for estimating reliability are discussed, including internal consistency, split-half reliability, Cronbach’s alpha, parallel forms, test–retest reliability, stability, and rater agreement, along with the conditions under which each method is most appropriate.
The course further explores standardization and norm development, emphasizing the importance of unified administration, scoring, and interpretation procedures. Participants learn how norms are developed from representative standardization samples and how different score types—raw scores, percentile ranks, standard scores, and modified standard scores—are calculated and interpreted for diagnostic and comparative purposes.
A detailed section addresses item analysis, including item difficulty, item discrimination, and distractor effectiveness, illustrating how statistical analysis of test items enhances test quality, fairness, and diagnostic power.
Ethical considerations form a critical component of the course. Participants are introduced to professional and ethical principles governing test use, including confidentiality, objectivity, qualified administration, responsible interpretation, and the proper dissemination of assessment tools and results.
The course concludes by emphasizing the interdependent relationship between validity and reliability, underscoring that a valid test must be reliable, while a reliable test is not necessarily valid. Through this structured framework, participants gain a solid theoretical and practical foundation for the responsible development, application, and interpretation of assessment instruments in educational and psychological practice.
